Money Vs Career

Money Vs Career...the debate isn't new...but something that's faced by most of us...Specially for the one's in the service sector...This is a question that came to me from one of my friends who is in a dilemma and couldn't decide as to what the next step should be...So, I thought putting it as a FACEBOOK status and on my blog could earn me some valuable inputs my fella bloggers.

Story of My Friend:

The girl is one of my school friend and got into working into a corporate. She has a job that pays kinda Well (as per her) and my friend holds a position (a little above than Entry Level). But, sticking to same place for four years and doing the same kinda work (same stuff everyday...which even makes me wonder...why four years at same place?), she has finally decided to leave the JOB

After a lot of discussion (and convincing her) my friend has finally decided to switch to a new place. And after months (more than 8) of searching she has grabbed herself a job into another domain, where the money is a little less (dan what's she gets now) but the future prospects are bright (Personally I feel money will follow sooner or later)...

Talking to a lot of people (indirectly) as in war between 'Money' and 'Career', got me mixed responses...while a lot want to take the shortcut of making 'fast money' mantra...there are some others (like ME) who say who cares about career (and the path is too long)...Let's Focus on MONEY...

So, here the question for all of my BlOgO buddies as to: 'What would you choose between the two?'

I hope this friend of yours is not all because she is getting all the wrong advice from her buddies. Who would you choose, A CEO of a company yet comes to work on a bus or a house keeping who comes to work to clean the entire office yet comes on a flashy BMW or a Mercedes car... You should always go for money, because money makes the world go round. :)

Just kidding. Definitely you should think about the job satisfaction and exposure to challenges. But don't take any rash decision. If these people are offering you less money or the same money that she is getting right now, well chances are there that the new place doesn't pay their employees good. Still even if the money is less but if she finds joy in doing that job well go for it after all one should love what you do. If the new place is promising a good hike after some time then its good news but what if they don't?

No matter which profession you take up, your work will remain the same. May be in the beginning it might feel different and exciting, after some days they are all the same, boring.. :)

The correct answer would be 'choose career'. But this isn't always practical. So I guess for a middle class family, the person has to keep his eye always on the monetary aspect, and try to pursue something in addition to that. 3 Idiots was precisely about this, and I loved the movie so much, because it talked about what one could have possibly done, instead of taking the beaten path. Personally, I don't have the courage to pursue 'career' by ignoring the money aspect.

tats was a good post... n for the answer to ur question.. if you had asked this question, say 3 years ago, i wud have asked to go for career.. but now u shud go for money..

see, if ur frnd is into an IT firm, then dont even think of making a career out of it.. GO FOR MONEY DOUBLE TIME!! hehe.. cuz when company is abt to sack people, they jus dont show sympathy towards their employees or they dont even think how brilliant that employee is. they jus squeeze the hell outa you and pay you nothing and kick u away. so don b loyal to ur company or don look for a bright career... career wil come automatically... not its time to make some money.. khe khe khe...

Definitely i will choose career. I would love to work which I like most and not a boring job as your friend had. What if your friend again gets bored of the current job. Money will come to you if you perform good and this can only be possible if you love your work.
If you choose money, i m not sure you will go far.

I know it can be very confusing at times. But personall when I get stuck in such a situation. I go by my hear. Though, your mind will tell you something, on the other hand, your heart will tell you something else. But, think like this, why not try new opportunity? rather than sticking to the same place. Even I switched my job on lesser package and a lower position but the work exposure is good, so I'm finding the work satisfaction which I lost in my previous job. So, tell your friend to go and try her luck. If she doesn't find it interesting, she can always go back and switch to her old domain. It's better to try the option rather than doing nothing and thinking. Life is too short to waste time on thinking. Go and grab it! Rest, she is the best judge to decide what is best for her. Hope it helps.

Love,
Ann

Hi Priya,
I agree with your point too...
Unless there is creative satisfaction n growth in what you do...
No amount of money would make you rock in your boots!
And when you are having fun, the money comes in the long run or does not matter so much!
Eventually why do we need money...for happiness only, right?:-)

Choosing is never easy, but the bottomline is money is not all we work for! Try finding the balance, it should make you happy too :)

All the best with your decision

I wud want a career a secure one, fast money always is short lived, i know from experience ... so less money but work for a longer time in the end works out better ...

my view without prejudice: 90% of the people doing there jobs are not satisfied with what they are doing..........now about the 10% they are the most famous people in there respective feilds. My answer is work for yourself, money is material and one cant be content with it. earn as much as you require.

I would go for career.. something I love doing, is way way better than the money I get for doing it. But if I'm doing something I don't really like.. then, i would want to make sure they're paying me enough to do it!! :)

I dont know why people even have these doubts, even after watching 3Idiots!!
It has to be about your career, money is never enough, its rightly said, you are never too thin, never too rich.
And once you have a good career, you will earn good too, obviously.
But sticking to one job or one company for 4 years, at the onset of one's career, (here I'm assuming your friend has not been working for more than 5 years), is not right either. You need to keep moving to better or at least new companies, especially if there is not much growth or change in your present company.

As I've witnessed, usually, when a candidate moves from one company to another, at the same level, he/she is often offered a hike of around 15-40% or a senior level position than she was in the previous company, depending on many other circumstances, so I feel your friend needs to know why she did not get the rise or post whichever the case may be.
